Overview

Antoni Gaudí (1852–1926) was a visionary Catalan architect whose unique and groundbreaking work has left an indelible mark on the city of Barcelona and the world of architecture.

The main highlights you should never miss on a first visit to the city are the Sagrada Familia church, the Casa Milà or Casa Batlló. But there are other less visited sites like Palau Güell, Torre Bellesguard, or casa Vicens. As well as Finca Miralles or Güell pavilions.

The Torre Bellesguard, a modernist castle designed by Gaudí in the Sarrià-Sant Gervasi district. It blends Gothic and Art Nouveau styles Recently open to visitors, built between 1900 and 1909 on the site of an ancient royal castle with superb views over the city. This is reflected in the names Bellesguard. The house is still a private property, but they open the gardens and towers to the visitors to admire one of the Gaudi’s jewels.

Casa Vicens is located in the Gràcia district. This is one of Gaudí’s first major works and is a beautiful fusion of Moorish, Oriental, and neoclassical styles. Its highlights are the ceramic-covered facade and the brightly decorated interiors. It’s less crowded than other Gaudí landmarks, so it’s a peaceful spot to visit. The house was declared World Heritage by the UNESCO in 2005.

Another gem designed by Gaudí, Palau Güell is in El Raval neighbourhood. It was commissioned by Eusebi Güell, a wealthy industrialist who was a patron of Gaudí. The mansion is a prime example of his early work. Its highlights are the impressive central hall with its parabolic arches and the rooftop, with its colourful chimneys that resemble medieval knights’ helmets.
