Overview
The Sagrada Familia is one of Barcelona’s most iconic landmarks and one of the most impressive temples in the world. This majestic basilica was designed by the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí and has been under construction since 1882. Its unique design and architectural complexity make it a landmark of Catalan modernism and one of the city’s top tourist attractions.
Gaudí’s Unique Design, the Sagrada Familia combines elements of Gothic architecture with natural, organic forms, creating a structure that seems to emerge from nature itself. Gaudí used a variety of innovative techniques, such as geometric shapes and the integration of natural light into the design of the nave.
The basilica has three main facades: Nativity, Passion and the Glory.
- The Nativity Façade, the most ornate and decorated, depicting the birth of Jesus. It is a masterpiece showing Gaudí’s ability to capture biblical scenes and was declared an UNESCO World Heritage in 2005.
- The facade of the Passion is more austere and dramatic, shows the passion and death of Christ, highlighting its angular shapes and the hardness of the sculptures.
- And the Facade of Glory, still under construction, will represent the Glory of Christ’s resurrection.
The interior of the basilica is equally impressive, with columns that mimic trees, creating a forest effect, and a roof that allows natural light to enter, creating a mystical and transcendental atmosphere. The Sagrada Familia is known for its ability to mix art, religion and nature.
The Holy Family will have a total of 18 towers, dedicated to the 12 apostles, the Virgin Mary, the Evangelists and finally to Jesus Christ. The tallest tower, which will be dedicated to Christ, will reach 172 meters, making it the highest building in Barcelona
Although the Sagrada Familia has been under construction for more than 140 years, the work continues to progress thanks to donations from its visitors.
